Obwohl seine Kollegen Maceo Parker und Fred Wesley stärker mit James Brown assoziiert werden, leistete Pee Wee Ellis den größten musikalischen Beitrag zu dessen bahnbrechender Erfindung des Funk. Heute zählt Ellis zu den großartigsten Tenorsaxophonisten, wird aber auf Grund seiner Vielseitigkeit gerade in der Jazzszene verkannt.
